The Austin Symphony is doing a concert at the end of July where we play live music along with Nat Geo nature films. I dearly hope we get to play this fanfare, written by the remarkable film composer Elmer Bernstein. It’s a classic.

It shows some similarity with his score for the Great Escape, particularly the motorcycle escape , IMO.

He is an under appreciated composer. He won an Oscar for his soundtrack for To Kill a Mockingbird . Brilliant stuff.

Most people wouldn’t rate Thoroughly Modern Millie , but, well, I liked it.

I’ve been thinking of listening to more Korngold lately...

Classic indeed.  This is one of those tunes that almost everyone recognizes instantly.

I remember gathering around the TV on Sunday nights back in the day to watch these shows, along with The Undersea Word of  Jacques Cousteau.

That’s great stuff. It would be a gas to play.

His score for the Errol Flynn Adventures of Robin Hood is one for the ages.

And you know John Williams grew up listening to this stuff.

Of course. Korngold was an interesting guy - child prodigy from Austr ia-Hungary (now modern Czech R.) who wrote all kinds of operettas and things before the motion picture industry exploded. He really came into his own with almost a Wagneresque use of leitmotif and borrowing as-needed from Liszt and others. Pretty nearly invented modern film scoring of the Williams school, but got absolutely no respect for it.

The ASO played the theme to King’s Row (featuring a young Ronald Reagan) for our high school concerts this year. They pitched it as the music that inspired John Williams’ Star Wars theme, but I’m not sure I buy that. Great music though.

I’m always saddened how much good music goes unperformed. Have you ever heard Fanelli’s “The Romance of the Mummy ”?

I have not, but it sounds intriguing.
